Our Cruise on the Carnival Pride Xmas 2009

This is our summary report of our recent cruise to the Bahamas over Dec 20-27, 2009.

2 days before Cruise departure -Friday December 18, 2009.
After a fairly mild December weather the outlook was that we were going to get on our cruise with very little expected issues.
In the days prior to embarkation the weather man started issuing the gloom and doom forecast for some SNOW to arrive for the weekend. As the days got closer the report only got worse.
So we pick up the story about 2 days prior to departure:
Thinking about work vs Cruise becoming difficult. Add weather forecast of the storm of the decade! was not helping.
Friday night Snow expected to start late evening and sure enough it started about 9 PM.
Now I love a good snowstorm, and it would be awesome to leave Baltimore behind and go to warmer climates, But we have to get to the ship!

Saturday 1 day prior to embarkation.
Woke early in the morning to check status. Yup it snowed a good bit overnight, sticking very nicely!
Forecast still to get Very Heavy Saturday afternoon. Now expecting 14" - 20" , Great just great. Baltimore does NOT deal well with weather handling. Never mind the storm of the decade.
Saturday PM - After a few attempts at keeping the driveway somewhat clear, it now became obvious that our getting to the ship may be in jeopardy.

Sunday EMBARKATION DAY.
We start our day very early again to clear our trucks and driveway to prepare to get to the ship.
After the trucks are ready to go we have to take a Sibe Sasha to her kennel.
The road to our house is the LAST thing they get to... the end of the end of the road on a Cul-de-Sac (dead end!).
So some trucks have navigated the road and proved it passable so we pile into our 1990 Jeep Wrangler and off to try and get to the kennel, we have already called them and agreed at a new appointment to drop her off. So it was interesting getting down our street and made the turn to go down the 8% grade and up the 8% grade on the other side. The Jeep handled it just fine!
once out of our development the roads were fairly clear, lots of icy spots on overpasses, and single tracks in a lot of places. Went very well.
Trek back to the house to get ready to go (early) to make the 15 mile trip to the Port of Maryland (Baltimore). That also goes well.
We put on some fresher clothes, threw the bags in the Jeep and we were off to the Port.

After the trek out of our development went well, the roads to the port were pretty clear and we got in the short line of cars already arriving with the same idea as us, DON'T MISS THE SHIP!

The Port procedures were very well organized and we move through all stations, luggage drop off, parking ($105 for the week), security, Cruise registration, Sail and Sign cards. Queued in line for board (Lucky Group 13) lasted only 30 minutes to get to us (20 min after they started boarding).
Woo Hoo ... we are on board! about 1:30 looking back down at others arriving. We got notice on the PA system that they are delaying sail from 5:30PM to 08:30PM. We did not care ... the ship was open for business and we were on board!
Began snooping around the ship, found the bar, paid for our SODA CARD ($48 each adult fixed price for unlimited SODA for the week).
Met up with our friends shortly after boarding.
I believe somewhere here we went to our first meeting with our Cruise Director Kirk and Assistant Cruise Director Jaime.
Made our way to the dining room 6PM for an Open Seating meal.
Sailed in the dark at 08:30 PM.
Still had boots and parka on while out on deck for sail out ... weird going on a boat on the water when so cold.
Found our way to the Lido Deck and checked things out and found all the buffets and all.
We did sign up for more excursions. 1 Jeep Tour of Nassau (For Thursday) and 2. the Behind the scened Ships Tour (For Saturday). ($90 per person but we recommend it, you MUST sign up ON SHIP and EARLY in the Cruise two groups of 16 people (32 MAX)

Day 2 - Fun Day at Sea - Monday
Morning breakfast on the Lido deck (Deck 9).
As we were admiring the view off the coast of North Carolina Outer Banks ... were were momentarily perplexed at why the Sun was sort of moving around the other side of the ship.... er that really means the ship had changed course! At first it seemed like a normal course correction, a sharp turn out to the East away from the coast, avoiding weather ? but it continued and then at the same time the Captain came on the PA and announced we had a very sick passenger on board and we would be returning back up to Norfolk Virginia.
That was about 0900 and it took us until about 1300 to dock at Norfolk. We dropped off the passenger to a waiting ambulance and got under weigh again about 1430.

The really good news that we received later on in the cruise was the patient was doing very well have receive some life saving attention and was expected to be release from the hospital in a few days!
So this all put us about 9 hours behind schedule plus the 3 for late departure. Captain assured us our arrival in Cape Canaveral, Florida would be on time.

Day 3 Fun Day At Sea - Tuesday
Ate Drank and snooped around.
Took in shows, karaoke (watched some incredible people there!).

Day 4 - Port Canaveral - Wednesday
We had signed up for the NASA space center excursion prior to the cruise.
It is a 7 hour, all day tour, includes a 3D IMAX movie (Custom showing for Cruise tours).
Part bus tour all around the NASA Campus, part museum tour of the Saturn V center (one of the last 3 Saturn V rockets, restored to Smithsonian specs,) on display .

Day 5 - Port Nassau, Bahamas - Thursday

Day 6 - Port Freeport, Bahamas - Friday
We stayed nearby the ship while others took taxi's to the "shopping area".
We just checked out the few tourist trap shops, bought t-shirts etc.

Day 7 - Fun Day At Sea - Saturday
We took our "excursion" on board, Ships Tour behind the scenes, we went everywhere, The Taj Mahal stage operations and Dance Captain gave us a run through of what they go through for all the shows they put on. A walk through the ships stores (Food Coolers), Gallies, met the head chef who give us the tour (Group Photo), Training center (tour guides work there), Engine Control was very cool, cannot see the engines themselves because the Azi-Pods (Electric Motors) are bolted on the bottom!, EVERYTHING is automated / remotely controlled.
We enjoyed the visit to the BRIDGE, got to meet the Captain (Photo), and a tour of Davids Steakhouse, met the Chef, toured the galley, and got a food preparation instruction.
(Day 8?) Debarkation Sunday Morning.
We did get a last run through the breakfast buffet on the Lido Deck!
Packed the night before and did the self disembark, carry your own luggage. A lot of waiting around and figuring out how this process really works?!
We eventually made it off the ship without any problems through security/customs we were back at home very quickly .... the 20" of snow we left behind had melted away!

We retrieved our Siberian Husky Sasha from her day camp/kennel. She was very happy to see us again, but was too hoarse to give us her normal Woo WOOO! but she tried! it was kinda funny!
We are sure she did her fair share of Barking/Woooing for a whole week!
She was back to normal the next day demanding things of her servants!

Closing Remarks
Kudos' to everyone staff, crew, show teams, magician, ventriloquist, karaoke, the band in the BUTTERFLIES Lounge, "The Jaffar Curry Band" was AWESOME, I just wish more people did not find this place? It has to be hard to play a great performance with only 10 people in the crowd. Particularly CD Kirk Benning and ACD Jaime did an awesome job participating and informing us of everything we need to do or what shows we need to see!
Together they put a face on Carnival Cruise Lines that is hard to beat. They always appeared sincere, truthful, and they cared about making sure they did their part to make sure we ALL had a good time, Including themselves.

Cheers
Ron N Sue

GPS Thoughts

For Reference: The one I have is a Garmin Nuvi 760
it came with the FM Traffic Receiver which is part of the Lighter Power plug.
When you borrowed the GPS, traffic subscription trial (3 months) expired and was not functioning.
I have since paid $60 to add LIFETIME TRAFFIC via Clearchannel FM reception.

I have had mine for about 1 year now and we still love it.
To respect what others have reported, your mileage can vary if you get a bad unit from the start.

Of course I bring my gadgets home and immediately update the software/firmware!.
So this might explain why I might not have seen the issues others have seen.
They might not have performed any updates on it.
They (all manufactures) do fix stuff .... technologies need user adjustment.
Not all are perfect turn-key systems.

Features to consider:

Model Numbers:
Garmin just like HP like to keep changing model numbers.
I have seen a 255W and a 255WT
The T being TRAFFIC (READ if says LIFETIME or NOT)

I have really only looked at Garmin units lately.
I am sure Tom Tom is all competative with features.
I am liking ALL the Garmin products I have ....
3 GPS's over the years ... GPS II+ , GPSMAP60C handheld, an now NUVI 760.

Bluetooth:
Used to wirelessly connect to your Cell Phone (if your phone has Bluetooth capability).
- Allows the Voice Command feature to make a phone call through your Cell Phone.
- Exchanges data with your cell phone to get your complete Contact List from your phone onto the GPS to create the Call Directory.
The phone audio is played out through your GPS for two way hands free operation.
My Opinion: In my experience this works pretty good!

FM Transmitter:
Uses this to send the sound output to the FM Radio installed in your vehicle.
You have to dedicate your radio to that Freq. = No music on the road.
As an alternative ... You can put MP3 songs in the GPS and that will play through the radio.
In my experience ALL - FM transmitters SUCK.

Voice Command:
The portable GPS I have had do not have this feature.
Sue's Chrysler 300 and my Dodge Charger (almost identical Navigation Units) support voice command of the Stereo and Navigaton.
It works with a lot of mis-commands/wrong radio station. I would give that a rating of barely OK.
My Opinion: I would not buy (or not buy) a unit because of this feature.

Map Version/year/Provider.
A few major providers- Navteq and Delorme ... others. may be relabled versions created by a major map company.
Garmin typically uses Navteq.
If you look on Garmins site under Maps for Sale :
Garmin Maps For Sale https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=1456#
You can see the ICON for NAVTEQ on the image of the CD cover.
The maps are the same maps all the GPS makers have, and are at the mercy of Navteq, Delorme, Rand McNally etc.

Traffic Provider:
2 major providers - 1. ClearChannel or 2. MSN Data Network
You need to correct receiver (part of power plug) to be capable to receive.
You need an active subscription.
Some GPS's now come with LIFETIME TRAFFIC (ClearChannel/FM)

Other News Weather Sports features:
Only available with the MSN traffic/data package subscription.
MSN Service Description

Memory Card Slot:
Most of the latest GPS units have an optional SD memory card slot.
this can hold:

  • Music MP3's,
  • Photos (slideshow while you drive)
  • MAP Points of interests , waypoints (Differs by unit)
  • MAP CARDS available from GARMIN.
Add EUROPE or Garmin MAD MAPS scenic routes.

Mounting:

All come with suction cup mount. (Except California - no mount allowed on windshield) I like the beanbag mount I let you borrow ... lets you put it close to you on the edge of the dash. also allows the you can get the OE Gamin beanbag or the universal like mine.

Fact Statements by Ron B.
(To dispute or clarify bad remarks found in reviews)

- No MAPS are completely accurate. Claims that Garmin (or other maker) sucks because they don't have roads in your neighborhood (such as your new Rt 43 Whitemarsh)

- Map datum's are acquired from a Map company. Not worth comparing one vs the other, just different missing roads/poi.
(electronic version of maps are just copies of the paper maps you have used until now).
Map Updates - Almost all are updatable to 2009 version of the respective Map Product.
(maybe even 2010 versions soon?)
Some offer a free one time map updgrade to the latest depending on the time frame of when you buy compared to when the new version is released.
Some also offer LifeTime MAP's?
Some you will have to buy and download and install the new map set.
(Just like buying a new Rand McNally car map! you get new one every couple years to get the new roads etc.)

Even our car nav systems are upgradeable via a CD.
- Two parts are upgradeable
- 1. System Software (Firmware) that runs all the features.
2. the Map Data and supplied Points of Interest (POI's).
Note: for car systems I have downloaded new versions and created a CD and updated the car system, seems to work fine, probably fixed bugs and added a couple features)

- ALL FM transmitters SUCK! Don't falt GARMIN (or any other maker). SIRIUS satellite radio receivers have that same problem. Go wired!

- Satellite Acquisition - initial startup can/should take a minute or two, then should be solid tracking of your position the rest of the day.
Tunnels are still a problem for satellite comms. Your GPS will "approximate" your speed and direction for a while before declaring a signal lost. I can make it 90% of the way through the Harbor tunnel before loss of signal is reported. While this is going on it shows my moving right along on the display the whole time and I found that pretty accurate. I am sure if you STOPPED in the middle the GPS will still show you moving.
(Built in GPS actually use your vehicle speed sensor)

- Some units did have issues with the Turn Now prompt being AFTER the exit!
I think all those were patched with updates.
I have seen this a little bit when you come across road intersections that have been recently rebuilt. Such as I-895 split/join with I-95 around Baltimore MD. Think about it ... how would the GPS "know" that the exit has moved 500 yds east and 800yds north?.

- Prompt for turns should start about 1 or 2 miles out alerting to turn soon. then about 1/4 mile it should prompt again. and then right at the turn it should say Turn Now or Exit Now.

- Don't count on Voice Command Features.

- Sound output ... I believe my Garmin 760 sound is very good.
I have read all the reviews/comments about the sound being lower ... that could be a deal breaker.
If that feature is very important to you then do NOT get the 855 until the sound volume is confirmed and/or resolved.

Expectations:
a lot of the complaints come from a misunderstanding of "how it works" and 'What the features really do". What do you "expect". If you do not get it, you end up very dissappointed and frustrated. Once you get to understand it better.

How YOU use the product:
- When/how often -Daily, Weekends, nights,
Important Feature: Big Screen or small and portable? Put in Luggage for travel?
- What for - Delivery service, sunday drive, Help Me ! I'm lost.
Important feature: Business POI's, Bluetooth Cell Phone support.
- Basic needs : Where am I Now? How do I get to?
Important Feature: Point of Interest Lookup!
- Sight/Hearing issues:
Important Feature: Big Screen and loud volume. "IF' the FM transmitter link works you can have sound (Voice Turn Prompts, beep, buzz indications) through auto sound system.
Preferred Audion out JACK for a cable to go to Audio In on Car Stereo. Cassette Tape Adapter works AWESOME. FM TRANSMITTER IDEA SUCKS in real world.

Amazon for sale page has a Table with feature list of Gamins

NEW! Another option is to replace your complete radio in the truck with a full radio/Navigation system. ??? Does cost some $$$ but makes it a LOT cleaner without the wires and plugs.
Of course this is a non portable choice, so you can't use it in another vehicle or lend it to a friend :-)

That is all off the top of my head .... I wil capture what I wrote here and add to it.
If you have questions on any particular thing let me know and I will focus on that.

Just Say No to the Digital To Analog Converter

Even with the $40 coupon for a $50-$60 converter still takes $20 out of your wallet.
- Adding the converter box to someones old TV does nothing but confuse them.
This is much like VCR's of the past .... When does it need to be on or off.
What does BYPASS mean. Do I tune the TV or the Converter.? Which remote do I use.

In the simplest of cases you are trying to help someone get a little more mileage out of their investment. The advertised goal of the converter program is to help the person with an older analog TV using rabbit ears or rooftop antenna. The person is on a fixed income, sometimes a little older, but otherwise not technically savvy. If they were, they would have already replaced the ANALOG TV or at least would be on a CABLE/SATELLITE system and this would already not effect them (yet).

It is my opinion that they would be much better off with a NEW Digital Capable LCD.
- Same operation as the one they have. One remote and just scan for available channels once and they should be set. No confusion on what to do. I have experienced others who I have helped in the past get frustrated and just don't watch TV until I get back over there and FIX it. It is not broken, they just could not get the combo correct.

- New TV CON - Yes it does cost money -
- New TV PRO - They would have a much improved picture .

- Converter CON - If the program source is in HD then watching it on an older TV would not be very good, it would work just not a good experience.
- Converter CON - the cheapness of these converters has demonstated that the TUNER in them is not very good. It does not pick up many of analog stations the original TV could (given the same performance characteristics, location -distance, altitude, line of sight).

If you current older TV is about a 19" Tube, a new HDTV LCD panel will cost you about $200 (VIZIO 19"). at the time of this writing. If you take the $20 you would have spent on the converter and ad $180 of your hard earned money. You will absolutely love it once you have it! The picture will be so much better. You will probably get MANY more channels in DIGITAL than you had ANALOG.
You will get that money back farly soon, because the operation of the new LCD will be much less than an old TUBE type.

That is the real deal.

A Camping We will Go

Just finished our first camping trip of the year.
We went to Elk Neck State Park located in Northeast, Md.
(that is the town name, and no just a direction).

A short trip to get the brand new RV tires broken in. Short also so we do not commit to big trips too early in the season and end up with the weather turning on us.

Of course being out camping with Husky "Sasha" keeps us busy going on walks to nowhere.
While out camping these walks take the place a listening to my Wii Fit trainer telling me like it is.

This time no trees fell on any of our Trucks/RV's.

Going out again in a couple weeks.
This time to Point Lookout State Park in southern MD.

That is all for now.

Cheers
Ron
